The word Moapa, the name of the town we live in, is a Paiute word meaning muddy water. When I was trying to decide what to name my little homestead, I thought that would fit our way of life.
The Websters have been ranchers for generations, something I'm trying to reconnect with. My great-grandfather picked the ink bottle as his brand, and it's still in use in southern Alberta.
For years I went camping several times a year and tried to get out of town at least once a month. I also spent years looking for a piece of property outside of town to build a cabin on. Then I got thinking: why buy something I can only go to once a month or so? Why not buy a piece of land I can go to every night?
That also answers why the desert. It was close enough to my day job, and it has one of the best communities you will ever meet.
Along with the land came the desire to homestead. To live a little more old-fashioned. To learn skills my grandparents knew but I had never been taught. So I'm learning, one mistake at a time.
